What is NESP ?

The Nurturing Emerging Scholars Programme (NESP) is a four-year programme for Honours, and a three-year programme for Masters students who show interest in becoming academics.

How long is the Honours NESP programme ?

This programme spans four years and includes a one-year Honours programme, followed by a two-year master’s scholarship, along with a one year academic internship at the host South African university.

How long is the Masters NESP programme ?

The NESP Masters programme spans three years and includes a two year Master’s scholarship followed immediately by a one year academic internship at a recruiting South African university.

What do I need to qualify for NESP ?

  • Need to show interest in becoming an academic
  • A South African citizen no older than 35
  • To be eligible for and to commit to a Master’s degree at a recruiting university for three years (two years study, and one year internship).
  • Meet the minimum requirement of 65% grade average.

How long does NESP run ?

NESP runs for four years for the Honours programme, and three years for the Master’s programme.

What does NESP cover ?

NESP covers your tuition cost, accommodation, personal care, meal, and electronic study device allowances, and a stipend for the internship year.

What is the closing date ?

Closing date for all NESP opportunities is 31 October 2023.

How many Honours opportunities are there ?

There is one Honours opportunity which has a total of 4 NESP positions available, and these positions come with scholarships specifically designed for Honours study at South African public universities.

How many Masters opportunities are there ?

There are two Masters opportunities to be part of NESP:

  1. There are a total of 14 NESP positions that come with scholarships for Master’s study at public universities in France.
  2. There are a total of 70 NESP positions available, each of which a scholarship for Master’s study at South African public universities.
